FLOWERING SHRUBS

YEAR 2008

All our shrubs have been container-grown to minimise root disturbance when planting.

The foliage of flowering shrubs is described as being either:

  Deciduous - they loose their leaves for the winter.

  Semi-evergreen - they loose some of their leaves for the winter.

  Evergreen - they are in full leaf all year round.

 

ABELIA. Semi-evergreen.

They will grow on most soils, but do require full sun. Clusters of small, trumpet-shaped flowers, white, flushed with pink. Flowering July-September. 122cm (4 feet). Price code C £3.26 each.

AMELANCHIER. Deciduous.

They must have a moist, acid soil, but will grow well in either sun or shade. White flowers, April-May. 305cm (10 feet). Price code D £3.78 each.

AZALEAS (DWARF JAPANESE). Evergreen and semi-evergreen.

and partial shade. 

Several varieties in a range of colours. 

April-May flowering. 90cm (3 feet).

BERBERIS. Evergreen and deciduous varieties.

BERBERISThey grow on any soil, 

in sun or partial shade. 

Several varieties varying from 30cm (1 foot) 

to 183cm (6 feet) depending on variety. 

All have thorns and orange or yellow flowers, 

April-May, followed by purple berries in autumn.

BUDDLEIA (BUTTERFLY BUSH). Deciduous.

White, yellow, pink, lilac-purple and deep purple varieties, 

flowering July-September.

  Most varieties need heavy pruning in March - check the label.

CARYOPTERIS. Deciduous.

They need full sun and a sheltered position, but any well-drained soil will do. 90cm (3 feet). Blue flowers, September-October flowering. Price code C £3.26 each.

CEANOTHUS (CALIFORNIAN LILAC). Evergreen and deciduous varieties.

All varieties are blue and flower July-September.

CHAENOMELES (CYDONIA or ORNAMENTAL QUINCE). Deciduous.

Any soil, sun or shade. 152cm (5 feet). Orange-scarlet flowers, March-May. Price code C £3.26 each.

CHOISYA. Evergreen.

Any soil, sun or shade.152cm (5 feet). White flowers, mainly during April and May. Price code D £3.78 each.

CISTUS. Evergreen.

Thrives best in a well-drained, sunny position. 45cm (1½ feet) to 152cm (5 feet) depending on variety. White or pink flowers, June-August. Price code C £3.26 each.

COTINUS (SMOKE BUSH). Deciduous.

Any soil, but a well-drained, sandy soil is best. They must have full sun. 183cm (6 feet). Fawn to grey flowers, June-July. Price code C £3.26 each.

COTONEASTER. Semi-evergreen and evergreen varieties.

COTONEASTER SIMONSII

Any soil, sun or shade. Many varieties 

ranging in height from 15cm (½ foot) to 305cm (10 feet) 

all with creamy-white flowers, May-June, 

followed by berries of orange or red.

CYTISUS (BROOM). Deciduous.

Thrives best in a well-drained, sunny position. 45cm (1½ feet) to 152cm (5 feet). Cream, yellow, red or mixed colours - flowers during May-June. Price code A £2.08 each or price code C £3.26 each.

DABOECIA (IRISH HEATH). Evergreen.

Acid soil, sun or shade. 30cm (1 foot). Purple or white flowers, June-September. Price code A £2.08 each.

DEUTZIA. Deciduous.

Will grow in most soils, but prefers light shade. 90cm (3 feet) to 183cm (6 feet) depending on variety. White or pink flowers May-July. Price code B £2.86 each.

DIPLOPAPPUS. Evergreen.

Prefers an acid, well-drained soil in full sun. 90cm (3 feet). White flowers, June-July. Price code B £2.86 each.

ENKIANTHUS (PAGODA BUSH). Deciduous.

Moist, acid soil and light shade are essential. 152cm (5 feet). Drooping, creamy-yellow bellflowers veined with red in May. Price code D £3.78 each.

ESCALLONIA. Semi-evergreen and evergreen varieties.

ESCALLONIA RED ELFThey will grow in any soil, sun or shade, 

but prefer a sheltered position and grow well against walls. 

45cm (1½ feet) to 122cm (4 feet). 

Several varieties of apple-blossom-pink or red. 

All flower June-September (main flowering in June). Price code B £2.86 each or price code C £3.26 each (depending on variety).

EXOCHORDA (PEARL BUSH). Deciduous.

A well-drained position in full sun is needed. 273cm (9 feet). White flowers in May. Price code C £3.26 each.

FORSYTHIA. Deciduous.

Any soil, sun or shade, but the more sun they get the more flowers they produce. 60cm (2 feet) to 183cm (6 feet). Several varieties, all have yellow flowers, March-April. Price code B £2.86 each or price code C £3.26 each (depending on variety).

FUCHSIA (HARDY VARIETIES). Deciduous.

but prefer good, deep soil and semi-shade. 

30cm (1 foot) to 90cm (3 feet). 

Several varieties in a range of colours. 

Summer flowering. Price code A £2.08 each.

 

  We do not put hardy Fuchsias on sale until the last of the spring frosts have gone.

  They should be planted deeper (the pots all have instructions on them).

  The first winter they should be regarded as tender; use sackcloth, similar open weave material, or straw to protect the lower-stems and base until spring.

  Never tidy-up hardy Fuchsias before new growth arises in spring.

  Another year let the old leaves dry and fall between the stems to create a perfect natural protection against winter and spring frosts.

HEBE. Evergreen.

HEBE PURPLE QUEENMost Hebes like a well-drained position in full sun (we do have a few which tolerate shade). 

We have a range of varieties from creeping, prostrate forms to 122cm (4 feet). 

White, blue, pink or shades of purple. 

Flowering from May to October depending on variety.

HYDRANGEA Deciduous.

Well-drained soil and light shade. 152cm (5 feet). 

White, pink, red or blue flowers, July-September 

(the flower colour of some varieties is changeable 

depending on the acidity or alkalinity of the soil).

HYPERICUM Deciduous.

Well-drained soil is best, but they should flower well in full sun or partial shade. 30cm (1 foot) to 122cm (4 feet). All varieties have yellow flowers and flower June-September. Price code B £2.86 each.

KERRIA. Deciduous.

KERRIA JAPONICA

Any soil, sun or shade. 

90cm (3 feet) or 152cm (5 feet). 

Yellow flowers, April-May. 

Price code C £3.26 each.

KOLKWITZIA Deciduous.

They will grow in any soil, but require full sun. 152cm (5 feet). Pale pink flowers, May-June. Price code B £2.86 each.

LAVATERA. Semi-evergreen.

Well-drained soil and a position in full sun are essential. 183cm (6 feet). Pale and deep pink varieties flowering July-September. Price code B £2.86 each.

  Hard pruning should be done in spring, never in autumn or winter.

LAVANDULA angustifolia (LAVENDER) Evergreen.

 in full sun are essential. 

37½cm (1¼ feet). 

Purple flowers, July-September. 

Price code O  £1.10 each.

  Pruning should be done in spring, never in autumn or winter.

LAVANDULA stoechas (FRENCH LAVENDER) Evergreen.

Purple flowers, June-September. 60cm (24 inches). Very aromatic, ideal for containers in sheltered, sunny positions. Unfortunately French Lavender is not fully hardy in this district, so must be protected in winter. Price code O  £1.10 each.

  Pruning should be done in spring, never in autumn or winter.

LEPTOSPERMUM. Evergreen.

Well-drained soil and a position in full sun are essential (best planted against a wall). 183cm (6 feet). Red flowers, May-June. Price code C £3.26 each.

LEUCOTHOE. Evergreen.

Prefers shade and any fertile soil to which lime has NOT been added. 60cm (2 feet). White flowers, May-June. They also have colourful, winter foliage. Price code C £3.26 each.

LEYCESTERIA. Deciduous.

Strings of pink and red flowers 

with purple berries from June to September.

LONICERA TARTARICA (DWARF TYPE). Deciduous.

Any soil, sun or shade. 122cm (4 feet), could grow taller in a sheltered position. Pink or red flowers, May-June. Price code B £2.86 each. 

MAHONIA. Evergreen.

They should grow in any soil, but some shade is essential. 60cm (2 feet). Yellow flowers, March-April. Price code C £3.26 each.

OLEARIA (DAISY BUSH). Evergreen.

A well drained position in sun or shade, but best in full sun.152cm (5 feet). White, daisy flowers in May or July-August (depending on variety). Price code C £3.26 each.

OSMANTHUS. Evergreen.

They should grow in any soil, but some shade is best. 90cm (3 feet). White flowers, April-May. Price code C £3.26 each.

PHILADELPHUS (MOCK ORANGE). Deciduous.

Any soil, sun or shade. 60cm (2 feet) to 183cm (6 feet). All varieties have white flowers June-July. Price code B £2.86 each or price code C £3.26 each (depending on variety).

POTENTILLA. Deciduous.

POTENTILLA ELIZABETH

Any soil, sun or shade. 

30cm (1 foot) to 122cm (4 feet) depending on variety.

 White, lemon, yellow, gold or orange flowers, May-September.

 Price code B £2.86 each.

PYRACANTHA. Evergreen.

Any soil, sun or shade. 122cm (4 feet) to 183cm (6 feet) as a free-standing shrub (against a wall they will grow much taller). Masses of creamy flowers in summer followed by golden-orange or red berries. Price code C £3.26 each.

RHODODENDRON. Evergreen or deciduous (depending on variety).

RHODODENDRONAcid soil and partial shade 

are their main requirements. 

We grow a small range of 

dwarf, spring-flowering varieties, 

colour and height varies with variety.

RIBES (FLOWERING CURRANT). Deciduous.

Any soil, sun or shade. 122cm (4 feet) to 152cm (5 feet). Pink or red flowers March-April. Price code B £2.86 each.

ROSMARINUS (ROSEMARY). Evergreen.

A well-drained position in full sun. If the soil has a high clay content, improve by adding plenty of organic matter before planting. 30cm (1 foot) to 122cm (4 feet) depending on variety. Blue flowers, April-May. Price code C £3.26 each.

SENECIO Evergreen.

A well-drained position in full sun. 90cm (3 feet). Bright-yellow flowers in June. Price code C £3.26 each.

SPIRAEA Deciduous.

A wide range from 30cm (1 foot) to 244cm (8 feet). 

White, pale pink or deep pink flowers, 

March-May or June-September flowering 

(depending on variety).

SYRINGA (LILAC). Deciduous.

Any soil, but they are best in full sun (although they still seem to flower well in light shade) and do not like acid soil. 244cm (8 feet). Price code C £3.26 each.

TAMARIX. Deciduous.

A well-drained position in full sun. 152cm (5 feet), can grow taller in a sheltered position. Pink flowers, May-June. Price code C £3.26 each.

VIBURNUM. Evergreen or deciduous (depending on variety).

Good, deep soil, sun or light shade. 122cm (4 feet) to 304cm (10 feet). White and pink varieties that flower in winter or spring/summer depending on variety. Price code C £3.26 each.

VINCA (PERIWINKLE). Evergreen.

Any soil, sun or shade. Creeping habit. White, pale blue, blue and purple varieties, flowering during May-September. Price code A £2.08 each.

WEIGELA. Deciduous.

WEIGELAAny soil, sun or shade 

(except for one variety that is prone to "sunstroke"). 

90cm (3 feet) to 152cm (5 feet). 

Pale pink, deep pink and yellow (the yellow needs a position sheltered from harsh winds).
