Frost hardy bedding plants: most varieties available at just £1.06 for a ten
plant pack.
We grow a range of frost hardy annuals which can stand being planted outside
from April onwards (sweet peas a little earlier).
These plants are not hothouse grown, but have been more slowly produced at
low temperatures.
If the weather is not suitable for planting when you get them home, do not
put them into a heated greenhouse. It would only make them produce soft tissue
with thinner cell walls and so make them much more frost sensitive.
Instead, leave outside in a sheltered position where they won't be blown
over. Keep them watered until you can plant out.
Don't confuse "frost hardy" with "hardened off".
Frost hardy means just that. The plants will stand the usual frosts occurring
at that time of the year, can be completely frozen overnight and still defrost,
recover and grow away afterwards.
Hardening off is what we do to tender annuals like French Marigolds: getting
them used to being out of the greenhouse or frame and ready to sell for
immediate planting after all frosts have gone. It does not, and cannot, make tender plants
frost hardy.
The following is a list of some of the varieties we grow for sale in April

are only a guide to eventual height.
