YEAR 2008

LILIES from £2.14 to £2.86.

We grow a range of over thirty varieties (not all are likely to be ready at once), varying in height from 30cm (12 inches) to 110cm (44 inches).

The colour range runs from white to shades of yellow, pink, orange and red.

Depending on variety they flower anywhere between May and August.

We put them on sale from the moment the new stems are well above the top of their pots.

All our Lilies are sold as growing plants; we do not sell them when they are dormant (no upper growth showing) and never as dry bulbs.

Lily bulbs are constructed from fleshy, overlapping scales which do not have a single, protective outer-skin and should not be exposed to the air for long enough to dry out.

Always read the plant label carefully, many of these varieties need to be planted deeper (planting depths are given on each label) due to their ability to produce a mass of adventitious roots from the underground part of their stems.

A deep, well-drained site is essential (they must not become waterlogged in winter). These varieties will grow well in most soils, but if your soil seems to be very heavy with a high-clay-content, consider mixing course sand and sphagnum (brown) peat into the planting area. As a peat substitute you could use forest bark.

Dwarf Lilies in particular are excellent subjects for planting in patio pots. The varieties we grow are hardy - not tender.

During the winter months we keep the containers on outdoor beds where they can be frozen solid for days on end.

Most Lilies like a sunny position, but will tolerate being shaded for part of the day. They do, however, like to have their roots shaded; this makes them ideal for planting in borders among other plants.

The taller varieties especially prefer a sheltered position. Varieties over 75cm (30 inches) will need staking (bamboo canes will do); put these in as you plant, or another year put them in as soon as the new shoots appear.

Pollen - some of the varieties we grow are pollen-free. Ask, if you need to know.

Deadheading - make sure you get the seedpods as well as the dead flowers.

Tidying-up - allow the stems to die-down naturally; only when the stems are completely dead should they be trimmed off at ground level using secateurs.

Watering - lilies should never be allowed to dry out completely.

Feeding - use a high potash liquid feed several times during the summer months.

Slugs - They are susceptible to slug damage, particularly when the shoots first emerge.
