YEAR 2009

This group covers a range of small collections of perennial plants not listed in any other section:

AGAPANTHUS (LILY OF THE NILE) Pot grown plants £2.00 each.

Agapanthus (Lily of the Nile) We grow both the blue and the white varieties; large, ball-headed flowers on strong stems (an individual floret can be up to 5cm (2 inches) long). 76cm (30 inches).

They must have full sun and should be regarded as tender perennials. They can establish themselves in sheltered, sunny gardens provided they are mulched for the winter, but are most reliable as patio tub plants, flowering better when pot-bound.

The containers should be put into greenhouses, sheds or garages after the plants have died down (under the staging will do), but keep them slightly moist to prevent the roots from drying out. Bring them back outside when re-growth starts next spring.

ANEMONE (SUMMER). Pot grown clumps £1.56 each.

Anemone (Summer) HollandiaWe have a range of white, pink, magenta-pink, red, blue, and purple varieties.

All are June flowering. 25cm (10 inches).

Any good soil that is well-drained will do, sun or light shade.

They will grow in most positions, but establish themselves best in warm, sheltered borders.

ASTILBE (HERBACEOUS SPIRAEA). Pot grown clumps £3.15 each

Astilbe (Herbaceous Spiraea)

The foliage has deep serrations and many varieties have reddish, new shoots in spring.

The individual flowers are tiny, but arranged in large plumes.

We grow pink, white, red and pale-purple varieties.

June-August flowering. Height 60cm (24 inches).

They have specific requirements:
Thrives in soil which is moist and, preferably, peaty (forest bark can be used as a substitute).

Can be grown on boggy land where you have little chance of success growing anything else.

Thrives best in light shade. If moved out towards more light they need  a wetter position.

Ideal for patio pots on the shady side of the house.

Because Astilbe can withstand periods of waterlogging the patio pots can be left partially immersed in a large container of water when you go on holiday.

Don't forget to retrieve them when you get back.

If planting on the banks of a natural stream make sure that the plants are secured by lines and pegs below ground. This prevents them from being washed away if the stream floods before new roots can grow out from the root-ball to lock them into position.

CALTHA (Kingcup or March marigold) PALUSTRIS ALBA. Pot-grown plants. £2.82 each.

Members of the Ranunculaceae family. Calthas are marginal water plants forming a dense, spreading cover of kidney shaped leaves. Compact, white flowers with yellow stamens are produced in early spring, often before the foliage develops.

While they prefer boggy ground and will tolerate standing in shallow water for lengthy periods they are best not planted below the permanent waterline in ponds or water features.

CANNA (Indian shot plant). Pot grown plants £3.15 each.

Several varieties. Height 50cm (20 inches). Flowers all summer.

In this part of the country Cannas are definitely not hardy. They are best treated as tender perennials which can be used for spectacular summer bedding displays, as container plants on sunny, summer patios, or for growing in conservatories.

Any planted in containers must be brought inside during the winter months or the rhizomes (underground stems) will be killed when the container freezes.

Those planted in beds should be lifted (carefully dug-up) before heavy frosts set in and stored in slightly moist peat or leaf mould. Pot-up in spring and replant outside after all spring frosts have ended (usually early June).

They must be kept at a minimum of 5ºc. Growth will re-start in spring when the temperature rises to a consistent 16ºc.

CIMICIFUGA JAPONICA (syn C. Acerina). Pot grown clumps. £3.15 each.

Clump-forming perennial producing tall spires of white flowers in late summer and autumn. Ideal for woodland gardens or moist, shady borders. Light shade and soil rich in humus are essential for success. 90cm (36 inches). Cimicifuga are commonly known as Bugbane, due to their ability to give off an insect repellent 'scent'.

CORDYLINE

     AUSTRALIS (Cabbage palm).

     75cm(30").

Pot grown plants. Price code U £2.00 each.

     AUSTRALIS PURPUREA

Purple brown leaf, a smaller form of Cordyline australis. 50cm (20 inches)

Pot grown plants. Price code W £2.55 each.

     INDIVISA

CORDYLINE INDIVISA Long tapering leaves,

dark green

with reddish midrib.

100cm (40 inches).

Pot grown plants. Price code W £2.55 each.

Given a long life without being caught by winter frosts, Cordyline plants will grow taller, developing central 'trunks' as the older, lower leaves are discarded. This eventually gives them a distinctive palm tree appearance.

CROCOSMIA (MONTBRETIA). Pot grown clumps £2.82 each.

Crocosmea (Montbretia) Orange flowers on arching stems above sword-like leaves.

They flower during August-September. 50cm(20 inches).

We grow the hardier varieties, but they still may need to be protected by mulch in winter.

Ours are over-wintered outside without mulch, but they are in free-draining pots and never get waterlogged.

COSMOS ATROSANGUINEUS (The Chocolate Plant). Pot grown plants £3.59 each.

Tender perennial. 60cm (24").They prefer a moist, drained position in full sun. Scented purple/brown flowers from June to August. Protect in winter.

DICENTRA (BLEEDING HEART). Pot grown clumps £3.59 each.

DicentraI Spectabilis (Bleeding Heart)Streamers of pendant, rosy-pink to almost red flowers with tiny protruding white petals. May-June flowering. We also have an all-white version. Both are 60cm (24 inches).

Ideal for shady or woodland gardens. They can be damaged by late-spring frosts and die down soon after flowering.

We also grow the dwarf DICENTRA FORMOSA at £2.55. These are less prone to frost damage and have more feathery foliage. Unfortunately the flowers are smaller, too. 37½cm (15 inches).

EREMURUS (FOXTAIL LILY). Pot grown plants £2.82 each.

EREMURUS (FOXTAIL LILY)Striking, yellow or orange flowers, June-August.

122cm (48 inches). Not the easiest of plants to find a home for,

they like both full sun and protection from cold winds,

plenty of water during dry spring or summer periods

and a mulch of sphagnum peat or forest bark in winter.

ERYTHRONIUM (DOGTOOTH VIOLET). Pot grown plants £2.00 each.

Erythronium (Dogtooth Violet) Kondo Pink, cream or yellow varieties, March-April flowering. 20cm (8 inches).

These plants do not like direct sunlight and do well in moist, shady gardens or woodland areas.

Do not disturb again after planting.

NOTE - The term "Dogtooth" refers to the shape of the root, not the flowers that are like pendant stars.

ENGLISH BLUEBELLS (Hyacinthoides nonscripta). Pot grown clumps  £2.55 each.

Clump forming hardy perennial. Natural woodland plant (grown from cultivated stock).

They prefer deep, reasonably fertile soil and dappled shade. Blue flowers in May. 30cm (12 inches).

LIGULARIA TUSSILAGINEA  Pot-grown plants  £2.55 each.

     AUREOMACULATA

Ligularia Tussilaginea AureomaculataClump forming perennial bearing dark green leaves with gold spots.

Requires deep, moist soil, shelter from strong winds and some shade at midday.

Grown mainly for it's foliage rather than the yellow flowers it bears August/September. 60cm (24 inches).

HEMEROCALLIS (DAY LILY). Pot grown plants £3.15 each.

Hemerocallis (Day Lily) Cathererine WoodburyYellow, pink or orange/red varieties varying in height from 45cm (18 inches) to 76cm (30 inches).

Usually flowering from June to August. While any reasonable soil will do,

they prefer a moist position and will require watering well in dry weather. Full sun or light shade.

HOSTA (PLANTAIN LILY). Pot grown plants £2.29 each.

Hosta (Plantain Lily) We have a selection of varieties suitable for growing in this area.

They will grow in most soils (prefer moist-drained), but must have shade.

Usually grown for their ornamental foliage, they also have attractive flowers of white or lavender-blue. Flowering period, July-August. Height depends on variety.

NOTE - beware of slug damage, particularly to the young leaves in spring.

IRIS (DUTCH). Pot grown clumps £1.77 each.

Iris (Dutch)We grow several varieties including: yellow, purple, bronze and blue,

all June flowering and grow to a height of 45cm (18 inches).
