HARDY PRIMULAS

YEAR 2008

Primulas are a large family covering a wide group of plants.

This can be a little confusing to new gardeners who will probably have seen tender, indoor varieties of Primrose or Polyanthus sold as Primulas in greengrocers and supermarkets.

All the varieties we grow are hardy, garden varieties suitable for planting outside in borders, tubs, pots, etc.

Primulas generally prefer moist soil and light shade, but because winter and spring light values are so much weaker than in high summer they can be used almost anywhere for early displays provided that they are moved into a shady corner for the summer (after flowering).

AT £1.42 FOR A SIX PLANT PACK:

PRIMROSE (BEDDING MIXED).

These are not F1 hybrids and will only flower in spring. Good of their kind, their flowers are not quite as large or bright as the hybrids. 15cm (6 inches). Each floret on a primrose has its own stem.

POLYANTHUS (BEDDING MIXED). Primula variabilis.

These are not F1 hybrids and will only flower in spring. Good of their kind, their flowers are not quite as large or bright as the hybrids. 20cm (8 inches). The florets on Polyanthus are arranged in large heads at the top of single stems. More spectacular, but more prone to wind and slug damage (they only need to chew through one stem).
